Thermodynamic data for radium for radioactive waste management have been predicted using an electrostatic model and correlation with the ionic radii of the alkaline earth metals. Estimation of the standard Gibbs free energy of formation and standard molar entropy of aqueous radium species and compounds has been based on such approaches as extrapolation of the thermodynamic properties of strontium and barium, and use of a model of ion pair formation. The predicted thermodynamic data for radium have been compared with previously reported values.

The Tono Geoscience Center (TGC) of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting geoscientific study in order to establish a scientific and technological basis for the geological disposal of HLW. Technical information of the result on the geoscientific study conducted at TGC is provided at the annual Information and Opinion Exchange Conference on Geoscientific Study of TGC for exchanging opinions among researchers and engineers from universities, research organizations and private companies. Thermodynamic interpretation of uranium(IV/VI) solubility in the presence of $$alpha$$-isosaccharinic acid

The effect of $$alpha$$-isosaccharinic acid (ISA) on the solubility and redox of tetravalent and hexavalent uranium (U(IV), U(VI)) was investigated in the hydrogen ion concentration (pH$$_{c}$$) range of 6$$sim$$13 and at total ISA concentration ([ISA]$$_{rm tot}$$) = 10$$^{-4}$$$$sim$$10$$^{-1.2}$$ mol/dm$$^{3}$$. The dependence of U(IV) solubility on pH$$_{c}$$ and [ISA]$$_{rm tot}$$ suggested the existence of U(OH)$$_{4}$$(ISA)$$_{2}$$$$^{2-}$$ as a dominant species within the investigated pH$$_{c}$$ range of 6$$sim$$12. For the U(VI)-ISA system, UO$$_{2}$$(OH)$$_{3}$$(ISA)$$_{2}$$$$^{2-}$$ was suggested as a dominant species at pH$$_{c}$$ 7$$sim$$13. The formation constants of the U(IV)-ISA and U(VI)-ISA complexes were determined by least-squares fitting of the solubility data. The solubility of U(IV) and U(VI) in the presence of ISA and its effect on the redox behavior were thermodynamically interpreted based on the obtained constants.

Mountain development has an influence on long-term changes of uplift, erosion, and groundwater flow related to change in hydraulic gradient. Provenance analysis is one of promising geological methods to understand origin and formation process of mountains. Case study in the Tono area, central Japan has been done for research and development of individual technique to estimate a provenance. In this report, petrological descriptions by meso- and microscopic observations and elemental distributions using scanning X-ray analytical microscope of basement rocks (silicic igneous rocks) from the study area were compiled.

This paper presents status of development of the iSRE (integrated system for repository engineering) as a design supporting system that enables rational designing of a geological disposal repository. The complimentary technique of construction information modeling/management (CIM) has been employed for the development of iSRE. CIM uses a shared three dimensional (3D) model of associated data through common data models. In this paper, as a design support system that conforms to the characteristics of information management about engineering technology represented by repetition of design during the disposal project period, we examined and designed the function of the "iSRE", constructed a prototype, and confirmed the function through a trial simulating actual work in the disposal project. As a result, with respect to the functions of DB and IF of the iSRE, we got a prospect that these functions can be the foundation of information management on engineering technology, and development of the prototype of the iSRE and its test run extracted issues for practical use of such system.

Zr solubility in the presence of gluconic acid (GLU) and isosaccharinic acid (ISA) was investigated as a function of hydrogen ion concentration (pH$$_{rm c}$$) and the total concentration of GLU or ISA. The dependence of the increase in Zr solubility on the pH$$_{rm c}$$ and GLU concentration suggested the existence of Zr(OH)$$_{4}$$(GLU)$$_{2}$$$$^{2-}$$ in the neutral pH region and Zr(OH)$$_{4}$$(GLU)(GLU$$_{rm -H}$$)$$^{3-}$$ in the alkaline pH region above pH$$_{rm c}$$ 10 as the dominant species in the presence of 10$$^{-3}$$ - 10$$^{-1}$$ mol/dm$$^{3}$$ (M) GLU. In the presence of ISA, the dominant species Zr(OH)$$_{4}$$(ISA)$$_{2}$$$$^{2-}$$ and Zr(OH)$$_{4}$$(ISA)(ISA$$_{rm -H}$$)$$^{3-}$$ were proposed to occur in the neutral and alkaline pH regions, similar to those found in the presence of GLU. From X-ray diffraction analysis, the solubility-limiting solid phase in the presence of GLU and ISA was considered to be Zr(OH)$$_{4}$$(am). The formation constants of the Zr gluconate and isosaccharinate complexes were determined by least squares fitting analysis of the solubility data, and the obtained values were discussed in comparison with those of tetravalent actinides.

Under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) Programme commenced in 1970 and ever since INIS has been acting as a database system available worldwide through information networks each time providing bibliographic information then full text documents of literature, technical reports, etc. on peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, thoroughly supported and maintained by INIS Secretariat in Vienna, on the other hand the inputs for INIS are provided by Member States and Organizations in their own boundaries. As for the INIS activity in Japan, while, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), then succeeded as the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) as of today, the both have been responsible with the INIS activity in Japan as the INIS National Centre for Japan based on the request of the "former" Science and Technology Agency of the Japanese Government, an advisory committee had have a very important role for the INIS activity in Japan by enthusiastically advising the whole related to the activity from advanced and comprehensive viewpoints of expertise. This report describes about it, the Advisory Committee of International Nuclear Information System (INIS) for Japan, successfully been held 34 times from Oct. 1970 to Mar 2005. Included are the history and its records, change of the member and topics of the Advisory Committee, and the minutes.

This paper presents status of development of the iSRE (integrated system for repository engineering) as a design supporting system that enables rational designing of a geological disposal repository. The complimentary technique of construction information modeling/management (CIM) has been employed for the development of iSRE. CIM uses a shared three dimensional (3D) model of associated data through common data models. The contents of this paper are the goal of the development, design requirements and required functions, the basic structure of iSRE. The main databases of the iSRE could then be designed with an interface to coordinate with external systems and other databases. Some of the databases and the interfaces were trialed and a data model was then built. A scenario of iSRE operation was also created and the applicability of iSRE using a data model was also examined. Thanks to the use of the existing software, the development process could be conducted while solving problems for realistic test cases. The prospect of the development of the iSRE for geological disposal projects was realized and the iSRE was confirmed as being a useful tool for designing a repository.

An ultrashort, intense laser-cluster interaction and a resultant structure formation are investigated in detail by employing a particle code including relaxation and ionization processes. In addition to a laser-induced polarization field, we have found that an ambipolar radial electric field and an internal/external sheath field play a key role in a disassembling dynamics of the cluster. Electrons and ions show a complex behavior leading to a prominent dip structure in electron energy distribution and a double structure in ion density and energy distributions for higher charge states.

Rationalization and utilization of double-wall vacuum vessel for tokamak fusion facility

It is difficult for Vacuum Vessel (VV) of ITER to apply a non-destructive in-service inspection (ISI) and then new safety concept is needed. Present fabrication standards are not applicable to the VV, because the access is limited to the backside of closure weld of double wall. Fabrication tolerance of VV is $$pm$$5mm even the structure is huge as high as 10m. This accuracy requires a rational method on the estimation of welding deformation. In this report, an inherent safety feature of the tokamak is proved closing up a special characteristic of termination of fusion reaction due to tiny water leak. A rational concept not to require ISI without sacrificing safety is shown based on this result. A partial penetration T-welded joint is proposed to establish a rational fabrication method of double wall. Strength and susceptibility to crevice corrosion is evaluated for this joint and feasibility is confirmed. A rational method of estimation of welding deformation for large and complex structure is proposed and the efficiency is shown by comparing analysis experimental results of full-scale test.

Decomposition behavior of PCDD/F isomers in incinerator gases under electron-beam irradiation

Decomposition behavior under electron-beam irradiation was examined for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF) isomers in incinerator gases. Significant decomposition was obtained for all PCDD isomers over the investigated absorbed doses, which was resulted from oxidation reactions with OH radicals yielded by electron-beam irradiation. In the case of PCDFs, specific isomers having symmetrical structures such as 1, 2, 8, 9-, 2, 3, 7, 8-, and 3, 4, 6, 7-TeCDFs were yielded through the dechlorination of PeCDF isomers. Thermal electrons probably played a role in the dechlorination of PeCDF isomers.

Influence of multidimensionality on convergence of sampling in protein simulation

We study the problem of convergence of sampling in protein simulation originating in the multidimensionality of protein's conformational space. Since several important physical quantities are given by second moments of dynamical variables, we attempt to obtain the time of simulation necessary for their sufficient convergence. We perform a molecular dynamics simulation of a protein and the subsequent principal component (PC) analysis as a function of simulation time T. As T increases, PC vectors with smaller amplitude of variations are identified and their amplitudes are equilibrated before identifying and equilibrating vectors with larger amplitude of variations. This sequential identification and equilibration mechanism makes protein simulation a useful method although it has an intrinsic multidimensional nature.
